The last 3 days I have not been able to get to the computer, helping mon. A few weeks back dad had a fall, breaking some bones plus a couple fractures also. Since he is still in rehab must get the soil ready for mom to plant seeds in the garden. I really wanted to join the chat, hopefully next time. Dad is healing fast, 7th day after that happened was already in rehab.
Found something really neat though. I found a small, what looked like a modern drill bit on the end, except it was stone. Much too small for drilling anything like wood or even hide, stone will break. It was very sharp. The only thing I can firgure out is this must have been for cleaning a pipe. Maybe the right size for where the stem fits.

Hi laughingeyes! Yes, I think I've read a post here somewhere by Runningwolf mentioning he was married to you. I did a ceremony for Dad this morning, sending healing prayers again. I was working outside again also. He can walk 250 feet now and will be checked by the doctor in 2 weeks to see if he should come home then. I was going to have to build a ramp for a wheelchair, for while he is healing. Now I don't have to, no need for a wheelchair. I'll have to count how many ceremonies I've done now for him. I don't belong to a tribe, so no medicine man to call for. No one else here but me who knows how. Let's see now... When it happened, a ceremony each day (first 4 days), this is not my private time for offering prayers, but in addition to that. My healing ceremonies were in a stone Medicine Wheel circle with healing stones, my feather (just dyed like Eagle, but is Turkey). I do all while Mom goes to see Dad, don't tell anyone here about this either. But during the ceremony of day 4, doctor told Dad to try standing, AND HE DID!!!!!
So, that is 4 ceremonies, plus another one on the weekend, then a week later. I think 3 since then. That should make a total of 9. At Pine Ridge, a Lakota Reservation, they have what is called a pipe fast which is 4 days. I wasn't fasting, my metabolism is very fast and need my energy. I could enjoy that though, if out somewhere away from people. I once had a pipe, when first learning Native American ways. Nobody had told me about the pipe carriers tradition, had no rules like that for myself. It was hard to find time or place to use the pipe. One time a car full of teenagers drove up on the gravel side road without me realizing it to watch. As finished holding up the pipe in the air, they started clapping and cheering. I miss using a pipe, it is a nice kind of ceremony for outside in the fresh air. I was taking a look now at Cherokee traditions. I read somewhere the Cherokees didn't have pipe carriers. Maybe this is how old times were, it would be nice to know if Cherokees have a pipe carrier tradition now.

I'm glad your father getting healing better!!! Be careful with that Medicine Wheel prayer stones in sacred ground, if it's broke apart from very old ceremony age and can't finding where it's belong to, then you can keep it in secret! (I won't tell everyone) Yep, in the history to present day, the most Cherokees carry their's own peace pipe, leather carry bag, tobacco, etc when they're meeting to his/her family and friends, include any Native American tribes. I have a real home made Cherokee Peace Pipe carry bag & beadwork by my friend who is almost full-blooded Cherokee, she made my beautiful deer leather carry bag with top beadwork with Eagle symbols & fringes, lighter with leather & fringes and beadwork, etc. I bought a real peace pipe wood with 2 deer's horns from Cherokee Gift Shop by Cherokee Nation Museum in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Also, I took cheap purple feathers & plastic beads off and sanded the peace pipe (that had bright Oak) then I added it darker natural wood color. I'll post about that in Art Work, Craft & Gallery board for you to see them soon!

Yes, I have learned a few things about Medicine Wheel prayer stones in sacred ground. The ones I use now are my own, just stones I find right for the use. But after using a few times, a carved White Buffalo stone in white Jasper really got my attention. So, I have only one sacred ground stone in the Medicine Wheel. I keep finding more and more very large ones. There is a boulder size stone about 2 feet tall on the property line, from when it was excavated before building. I had no idea then it was sacred ground of Indians, until seeing sacred stones later. It is most beautifully carved, has a compartment slot 2 1/2-3 inches wide on front side edge, goes down behind the warrior arrow shape to be deep enough for placing effigy stones to bless in ceremonies.
We used to live about 4 miles from here until last spring, just south of the old main part of the Indian village. I had once used the large Medicine Wheel prayer stones in our woods and with pipe ceremony. There came a time when it seemed they must return to the soil. I left them where I'd found them. Nobody needed to tell me this, it could be felt. Those stones were also left intact in the woods until not using anymore.
At the present time don't have a place for a permanent Medicine Wheel, so set up just the 12 outside stones each time, in the way of Plains Tradition. For a sacred space, not permanent, walk around the circle 4 times as Lakota did mentioned in White Buffalo Woman legend, in the Medicine Teepee. You can feel the sacred space then before starting a ceremony. I have been considering setting up a larger permanent Medicine Wheel outside complete with center stones, spokes also, but would have to bury the stones then in the yard. You can't use lawn mower if stones on the surface. I'm not sure yet about burying the stones. It should work though if I have it by a tree, so can find the center. Maybe around one of the small trees. To other people may look like I'm weeding around it. That might be a good idea!
I do like pipes though, glad to hear Cherokees can have their own. Was thinking that might be the tradition. There are some really nice Indian carved pipes out there, if you want to spend the money for one. I think if you had someone else decorate it, pipe would be more special.
Nothing was done to preserve sacred grounds in my county. They did make the river part near main village historic preserve, only for the river boat use of early settlers. The main Indian village is a farm field now. I don't know of any Indian reservation land (by looking at map) in Indiana. Old time maps show them in Ft Wayne, many places and very large ones near Peru, IN. My state seems to have been a real treaty breaker.
Pipe bags, there is a very nice Indian made decorated bag, large enough and don't remember who made it. The site is somewhere in my bookmarks, have a lot of bookmarks now. I was just looking at a white buckskin pipe bag kit, you bead it yourself.

Lone4Eagle: My name is Soars with Eagles and I am of Huron and Kiowa decent and have been too long absent from this site but been preoccupied with the formation of an historic happening the forming of 1 tribe from all Nations. Please forgive my not welcoming you and others in the manner which I always did. I am a healer ( among other things) and it is a great honor for me to speak to you today, I am also a pipe carrier or as I call it a pipe caretaker, there are very few ceremonies more scared than the canupa. It sounds to me like you are on sacred ground and the spirits have welcomed you with good hearts. the use of green calcite is excellent in strengthening bones and aiding in repair of fractures, place a stone in your fathers medicine bag and you may be delighted with the results. It has been a while since the last post and I pray and can almost feel that the bones have mended although the arthritis may be severe, try the calcite and if you get very thirsty and have no water around put it in your mouth and your thirst will be quenched, I wish only good things for you, my brother and for your family. Oh you may try using newspaper to help keep the weeds down in you very sacred medicine wheel, AHO & Pilamiya

Hello Huronwoman! I just got back from visiting friends out of town this weekend. My parents have Indian blood, but don't follow the old ways. They believe in healing though at their church. Only recently have I learned about my Indian blood. But I have learned how to perform a sacred pipe ceremony and healing since 1989. So far, never have used a doctor since that time, just dentist for my teeth. I've had some serious healing needs at times. I used to bless water for myself in ceremonies with healing stones in a seashell. It was my way of learning. Wave a feather over a glass of water, drink it after the ceremony. Different stones made me feel health in different ways in my body.
Green Calcite should be good for bones. For Dad I added a piece of bone looking White Chert to my healing stones with green drawing on paper of a Bear. At times used Red or Orange also. My Dad is doing so good now, is using just a cane and does plenty of work outside in the lawn, garden. Each week he gets less dependant on the cane.
I wanted to look on Ebay for crystals and stones, need to get some more kinds. I need also to start blessing water for myself again and learn more of the healing properties. Turquoise is something I've got to get plain polished stones again. Turquoise for healing with blessed water was very calming. It seemed to make me sleep or relax on the couch.

Thank you for your wonderful and insightful reply!!! Howlight which is a which chalky stone with dark lines through is is also excellent for healing purposes, When used for healing purposes some put stones on the 7 different chukkas along the mid line of the body and then use an eagle feather to smudge the person, I personally use what the Christians call Laying on of hands, I don't know what it is but I can feel the energy coming from the creator through me into the person and back into or out of me with the other hand, I can usually pin point the problem area without even touching the person, weird huh? Someone asked once what I called what I did and I shrugged my shoulders and said it's an Indian thing. I then have a cleansing ritual I must follow so as not to retain what I have taken from the person. It is a gift the Creator has blessed (or cursed LOL) me with and I will continue to use it to all who ask for it. I am very glad your father is doing well, I see him without the cane with out 3-4 weeks. He is a strong willed person and will be back to his old self in no time, Your wife must be very please with you as well, you are using the "old ways" without even knowing them, Hoka Hey!! I am very lucky to have a Rock Shop in the small Village I live in, Let me know what you nee and I can get it for you or they may have an on-line store I will check, I get all my beading stones there as well. Also for insomnia put a piece of fresh Resemary under your pillow and you will sleep like a baby

Thanks Huronwoman for sharing some about healing. I used to make blessed water, using the Eagle feather and stones. My Dad is healed enough I can now begin using stones for myself again. Dad and I have been doing work outside last couple days building a retaining wall, the kind with heavy blocks for holding back soil. These blocks don't use mortar, the edge hooks over the other and crushed limestone behind the wall holds it together. Dad is using a hoe and shovel without his cane. He is so close to not needing a cane. This last Sunday I got out a piece of Rose Quartz and Amethyst. These where good starting stones for Dad's healing, had green in ceremony. Brown Bear appeared first time to help. In the past was always the Grizzly Bear. Used to always do healings with stones to the West, now the South. New Bear and new direction. The pipe ceremony I have now mentions healing in the South. I know that not everyone does things the same way. Anyway, started blessing water again for good health. Rose Quartz and Amethyst, a glass of water (clear glass cup) green for a ceremony color. I wave the feather over the cup of water, left to right in a fanning motion. Almost if you would smudging, but no smoke. Did this 4 times from fanning starting at left, until over all the cup and right, back to left again. What I meant was keep fanning across all the cup and back 4 times. You mentioned laying on of hands, I've blessed water that way sometimes by just picking up a glass cup of water, holding with both hands instead of waving the Eagle feather. I finished the healing ceremony Sunday, was careful as picking things up...except at the last moment and reached for last item knocking over the cup spilling the blessed water. It happened in the basement, so the cup had a couple drops in it yet. Drank the couple drops, then used my hands to get up some spilled water from the floor and rubbed my face and head. Water was dirty some now, couldn't drink any spilled water. I learned a new use for the water, rub blessed water where healing is needed. My head still feels good since then. At the end of each day, no tension or discomfort in the area around my head, just nice healthy healing from the water, even around both eyes.
Before Dad's fall had planned on getting a 1 lb. lot of mixed stones, Citrine crystal, polished Turquoise, a couple clear Quartz crystals also. I have plenty of Amethyst rough, some chunks are about fist sized. Have plenty of white or light Rose Quartz, a couple nice large chunks of bright rose pink ones which are best for healing. Mostly what I have now are rough stones, a few agate types.
I'll look on Ebay first, but if the rock shop you mentioned has a variety of stones, there is so much I need to stock up on. Once had 2 pouches of stones I collected in travels out to the Southwest. I really want to get a collection of healing stones again. I like various colors of agates, especially blues.
I'm not married, you asked if my wife is pleased for using the old ways? Well, almost would have gotten married at the age 19. I was young and had just joined a Chrisitian church for the first time. It didn't work out that time, joined a different Christian church where people believed in healing and used the laying on of hands for healing, like you mentioned to me. I stayed there until 29 years old, things were so strict there, but stayed because of healing. I think this is why had been still single, church had too many rules and not enough freedom. Soon after leaving the Christian church, discovered the old ways of Native American religion. Spent a couple winters with relatives in Southern California, wanted to move there. I came back home to my parents to work and earn more money. As I left California, a major earthquake happened 1 1/2 hour time driving and was in the desert. I held on to the steering wheel tightly. This happened in April of I think 1990. I started earning money here to go back, that summer high gas prices started rising, then 1st war with Iraq. Never did get moved to California. The world fell into chaos, many well established companies went out of business, money became scarce to everyone. So, am still with my parents for now. Last year they moved into a new house I helped my Dad build. Still helping them get all the landscaping outside finished. Mostly done but a few things yet.
I think Turquoise might be the first stone I'd like to get. Really. a mix of many different types of stones would be nice. I'll check out Ebay first, get started getting some. Maybe you can then recommend some from your area rock shop.
Thanks for your help...healing stones are one of my favorite things!
