Hello,
My name is Frank and am an airbrush artist who has been asked to paint 2 portraits of and indian chief and his wife. They are to appear together on a motorcycles hard bags but they wont be on the same bag together but separated by the rear fender . The customer was told that there may be a superstition about having the two facing or facing away from each other. I have tried to research this on the internet and cannot find any information on this.
Would someone be kind enough to help me layout this painting the correct way.
Thank you

Welcome to the forum Frank. It sometimes takes a lil while to get a response back here. I can't answer your question. But someone may speak up soon I'm sure.

The NA superstition had to do with photos or any type of portrait stealing your soul. Try Yahoo Answers and you will find similar beliefs in other cultures, even among some whites of early America. link-Belief that photos steal your soul?---Yahoo AnswersHere is one answer.... "It's actually a Native American superstition. They believed that the image of you superimposed on a piece of paper, or etched on a piece of glass as it used to be done when photography was first invented, stole a piece of the soul."In the last dying out days of original Indian culture, as it used to be during the wild days of the American Frontier, a well known photographer began documenting various tribes around the country. Not an easy task but he became highly successful at capturing images of Native Americans. One of the Crazy Crow catalogs I got once had a portrait of a Cherokee princess on the cover. As it turned out reading the story behind the cover, an artist from here in the USA did the artwork and looked so real that I though at first to be a photo.

Thank you LoneEagle, I'll look there for more info. But I think I may be ok then. My concern was in the layout of the portrait either looking at each other or looking directly at the viewer. If capturing the person on film is the only issue I'm ok. My customer wants me to recreate portraits onto his bike from other paintings that were most likely imagined.

Tried to ad other photos but thread would only take 2. It has been a pleasure and an honor to do this project. I hope to be able to post the photos of the portraits that are being placed on the hard luggage bags that go with the bike.

If capturing the person on film is the only issue I'm ok. My customer wants me to recreate portraits onto his bike from other paintings that were most likely imagined. I don't think it will be a problem. I'm doing some sketching right now, trying to finish up a portrait. Not doing any of Native Americans yet, still in the beginning stages of applying a new technique. The first was only a study type portrait and this one is the real one to look nice. There is a thread in members photos board at the easel. The person in the sketch might appear to be NA but actually just a world leader. Will have more recent pics soon, hopefully can get things wrapped up here. The reason my photos are in this board, I'm in each of them. link-My portrait work and me

The new forum upgrade allows the option to merge a post or thread into another thread, so it picked the right place according to time of your posts.
Normally 1 comment will post 2 or 3 pics, depending on the image file size. Just make another post to add more photos.

is there a way to post a pic directly from my computer? Yes, I'll try to keep it simple. Either get full editor by clicking quote or use reply. Follow this image of comment box. 1. Arrow to use attachments top right corner. 2. Circle (left side) on browse or add button to your computer. 3. Allow image to upload until the insert button appears to the right. Click insert only once, then click done on bottom right. Image will not display until posting the comment.

After clicking done the code will be in the message. You can get below the code with computer mouse and enter key to add another image by repeating the process. Depending on photo size, usually can get 2-3 images on each comment. You can type text lines between the image code lines in the messages.

thank you !!!! now new problem ..... the mural of his kids, he wants a tipi village scene with his kids dressed in what would have been every day clothing to fit the scene. I am having a hard time finding reference pictures that dont depict highly stylized pow wow type costumes. Is there a good site to use to see authentic historical photos featuring what a kid would wear ? any advice would be greatly appreciated .
