Hi everyone, At the pow wow last Sunday I was looking for a dove fetish for my daughter and the guy asked why a dove. I told him she was named after my one of my best friends and her middle name Dove is after my favorite great aunt, my aunt Mourning Dove. He goes Morning Dove, huh and walked off! It really ticked me off! My great aunt was the youngest and her grandmother was the person that named her. She chose the name because many of our family had been forced to walk and some died on the Trail of Tears. Or so I have been told. Has anyone else had problems with peoples reactions to family names or to the names that you have chosen for your children?

Annie: I have a very difficult last name to pronounce and have been made fun of all my life. please do not allow the ignorance of others to create anger in yourself. You are a HUMAN BEING the person (I use the term loosely) who thought to make a mockery of your daughter's beautiful name is not a HUMAN BEING and doesn't deserve any thought from you. You have nothing to prove to anyone. others flaws are just that, the problem is THEIRS not yours, try not to let them make it yours by becoming angry, I just look up to the Creator and ask that they be taught tolerance, replace the anger with love and name your children what the Father tells you to name them we will always face injustice and intolerance and have since Columbus landed. It is my hope that all Native Americans will one day join together and become ONE NATION giving us more power than you can imagine, then the non HUMANS will have to deal with ALL of us--AHO

I did her the same as my older brother did for me a 1st. name that fits in the white community and a 2nd. that is after a honored member of the Native community, since she will have to walk in both worlds. Funny thing is if I had named her after my great great grandmother Savanah no one would have realized it was a Native name. As for my 1st. name my brother messed up. How many Antonia's do you meet? lol I have been told he chose it from a book he was reading and I should consider myself luckya week later he was studing the Tzars of Russia and I could have been stuck with Annatassia! It just bugged me that he treated my daughters name as proof of a wanna be. I'm lucky that my brother got to name me! My parents were tossing around Gerald Elaine combining daddys 1st. name and mothers 2nd name, OR naming me after 1 of my great aunts like my dads sisters had done. I should explain that my great grandfather was a bit of a scholar and he named all his sons after Preidents and Generals, BUT his DAUGHTERS, he named after Goddesses and Queens with Scottish names at either the begining or middle. I was 10 before I found out that Aunt Dittie was really Afraditie (sorry spelling) I also had a Aunt Vesta, ect.. You can understand why my great aunts chose nicknames or simple middle names!

My real full name is Patrick Morris Richard. In Texas City, TX there's a person who have same full name as mine.... I hate my middle name is "Morris", So, I'll ask the government or court house to change my middle name from Morris to White Eagle for me but is it cost me to change middle name?

White Eagle: The paperwork for filing a name change can be found in any library but the filing fee is or used to be $110.00. To me whether it is legal or not your name will always be WHITE EAGLE!!

Yep, same here, to me you will always be White Eagle too. Funny thing about my daughter getting teased about her middle name in public school, some of the kids she went to school with had much worse names! People actually named their daughter Porche, Princess, Queen ect.. for 1st. names and these were the kids making fun of the name Dove!

White Eagle, In the past, the middle name of either male or female children was used to connect the family name of the female side... such as my Father's middle name, Doyle, is a silly name (sounds like a spring to me) but connects to the family line going back to Jamestown. If you do leagally change your name you will have to ensure that Uncle Sam connects the dots of your previous earnings so that you get the right amount of Social Security. They seem to have a bad habit of "loosing" it. I would suggest getting a complete accounting (and double check their figures) of your earnings first, then copy all the paperwork 3 times on to cd's - placing the compact discs in 3 separate secure places in case of a natural disaster. Just a thought... Jen

Thank you for let me know, Jen.
I talked to my old friend long time ago, said that I can change full name but it'll cost me about $500.
I'll leave my last name alone, that's from my real father's last name, he's full-blooded French (Cajun) who was born in Cajun Country, Louisiana.
His stepfather name is Morris, he named my middle name before his stepfather died.
My mother gave me first name is Pat but now she knows that I'm really need to change my first and middle name because I look like some Cherokee blood from my Great Grandmother (my mother's Grandmother) who's half Cherokee blood.
So, last year my mother gave me a new first nick name is White Eagle.
Also, I'm Wolf Clan and spiritual.
I have a good idea to change my first name is White Eagle and middle name is "Wolf" with original last name is Richard.
My full name will be White Eagle Wolf Richard in the future.

Many of us who have been blessed with Native American names do not use them in our business life because of the hassles and expense of changing them. What we call ourselves to each other and to the world is not necessarily what the government calls us and the only government I am concerned with is the Tribal Counsel so who cares that Social Security knowns me as Judith Cyr (last name is Huron anyway) but to my fellow Natives I am Judy, Sparrow Soars with Eagles. And I were it proudly! ;D

I too hope you will receive an Indian name soon, an Elder may give you one as was the case with me, I waited a very long time for an Indian name, my mother always called me Hawkeye and maybe that should have been my name but didn't even remember it until after I was given my name, I like Sparrow Soars with Eagles better, after all you know what happens when the sparrow flies with the eagles, the sparrow beats up the eagle! If I knew you better I would give you a name, many people have come to me for names and I have given them a name after much prayer, I will ask the Father for one for you if you like?

i just discovered this thread..and I know it has been idle.. but I had to laugh.. White Eagle didnt like his middle name Morris..
well..my name is Jay Morris (LOLOL) I didnt like my first name Jay.. like Jay Oklahoma....but of course it always reminded me of the loud and annoying blue jay...growing up everyone called me jaybird ...drove me nuts.. of course then I was still unaware of my familes buried n.a. heritage.
The name Two Shadows was chosen by my immediate family (wife, kids)..thank god ..it was that one rather than the second choice "scrubbing bubbles" (my wife's suggestion ..she is not particularly happy with my native-journey.. she says she didnt marry an indian..I tell her well..she's married to one now)
I have been thinking about "Jaybird-with-two-shadows".. further evidence of my rather schizophrenic background lol...
seriously... what do we do when we have no elders ...no other option? there are plenty of Algonquins here..powhatan etc.. but hardly no Iroquois at all..I think only 3 member of the UCN ..

Hello friends , mmmh! names ....My first name "Olwen" is Welsh which means "little White Flower". My name is common down in Wales , but not here in Scotland (LOL). There is a story to the name , short version is .....about a man & a "Ogre"...the guy either married his daughter (Olwen) or sacraficed her to him ...and where she had walked little white flowers appeared. perhaps i'll get the right story and tell you it one day.

That's fine you had to laugh, no problem. ;D I didn't know you have last name same as my middle name, good to have our brother names. ;D j/k (Just kidding) I can change my full name in the future when I have enough money then I'll going to the Court House and signing many paper work and paying them to change my full name, I don't care if it's expensive. I'm really need to change my own full name, so that'll helps me very comfortable and nuts will be over, lol. My Uncle name is Jay Richard (my real father's brother) Jay told me his friends had joke to him and called him "Blue Jay", he drove him nuts too, LOL. ;D Do you meant your wife is not happy with your Cherokee Indian blood? OR you meant other woman? I hope the Cherokee Elders of UCN are helping you when you need help.
