Please have patience, this is a serious question that I'm posing because of a situation that has perplexed me from an AIA experience years ago.
In groups, is there a Head Elder? Is it voted on by the majority attending or majority of the group consensus? Or is it across the board that All Elders are of equal status?
Then, I have another situation currently that I would like to know about. When one has not asked an Elder to be the personal teaching Elder but that Elder is giving/ has given sage advice is it permissible for the learner to pass this information on to other learners in conversation or should it be kept to ones self?

Tribal Elders are named by the Tribal Council, Well respected elders are wise men not necessarily given council status but are sought out as teachers and for their counsel. In the traditional way you should take a pipe to the elder you want to have teach or counsel you, if the elder keeps the pipe He will help you, if he takes the bowl but returns the stem he is either unable or unwilling to help you. As far as passing on what you have learned that should be between yourself and your teacher, I cannot advise you there. Also as with anyone whose councel you seek, a tobacco offering is traditional.- Hope that helps. Usually when the student is ready the teacher will find the student and the Creator will bring the two of you together. I wish you much luck and offer many prayers that your questions receive the answers you seek. AHO
