Hello All! I was honored on Sat. Nov. 25th by being invited to a Ceremony that was the first ever of the merging of two tribes: The Chief of the Four Winds Apache Band and the Chief of the Texas Lumbee Tribe merged their tribe into one with the Chief of the Four Winds Apache Band becoming the Chief of the merged tribes which were then renamed the "United Native American Indians of Texas" Tribe. It was a Beautiful and very spiritual ceremony, we women gathered the wood for the ceremonial fire and then we entered the circle being smudged first and the ceremony took place, since the new Chief was already a Chief he wore his Headdress, the outgoing Chief removed his headdress and prayed lifting it to the 4 directions and then placed it back on his head. A prayed was said and then he used a hand drum and sang a prayer, he then smudged all who wished to be smudged and we followed him out of the circle. After a while we gathered the dancers and danced a while. I am still full of the Spirit of the event. Since this was an historical event there was plenty of press on hand and applications for membership from all tribes will be considered. The event took place at a wonderful setting at Apache Pass, Texas there were some vendors, beautiful woods and a river the winds were fantastic and all went off without a hitch. I cannot tell you what an honor it was for me to be a part of this event.

Would you be so kind as to explain to this Indian 'newbie' what smudging is? My guess is it has to do with ash from the ceremonial fire, but I am just now starting to learn the Indian ways.

Are these people trying to seek Fed. Rec., State Rec., or just stay the way they are? I know that the Lipan Apache are working diligently on regaining their Fed. Rec.
