Osiyo (Hello in Cherokee), I found this site a couple of days ago. I haven't really gotten to look around much yet, but what I see so far, I like. I guess I'll introduce myself, and tell you a little about me. My name is Mike, and I am an enrolled tribal citizen of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma, which is federally recognized. I am of mixed blood descent, meaning I also have Choctaw, Quapaw, German, Irish and Italian blood flowing through my veins. I am an artist and am a member of the Cherokee Artists Association( www.cherokeeartistsassociation.org ) I specialize in the art of Cherokee basketry, but also do traditional Cherokee coil pottery and sculpture, Cherokee beadwork and I dabble in Visual Arts. I have a website, if anyone cares to check it out. www.gatlida.orgAlso, there is an article that was written about me and my basktry in the Living Culture Newsletter. the address to that is www.livingculturenewsletter.net/vol1artistcorner if anyone wants to go read. Ki-la (later, Mike

Osiyo, Mike! I, too, am Cherokee and mixed with a gament of other things. It is nice of you to join us here. I love this site. I have learned a lot and have made many new friends. So many, in fact, that it is hard to keep up with everyone, so I just make sure I keep them on my prayer list. If are are equipped, I am not, to put pictures on the board, I would love to see your art. I am always fasinated by the gifts the Great Mystery shares with us. So many here are gifted in many different and wonderful ways. Welcome and I look forward to getting to know you. ;D

Thank You all for your kind words. My teacher is getting ready to start teaching me how to gather and process TRADITIONAL natural materials to weave and dye my baskets with, instead of the commercial stuff I use right now. We are starting next Friday with gathering honeysuckle, and will work our way up River Cane which is the most difficult, and in my oppinion the most beautiful. There is a picture of one of her River Cane baskets on one of those pages, not sure which one though
Anyway, I am excited, because this will open a whole lot of new doors for my art. For one, a naturally made basket is worth 2, and sometimes up to 5 times what a basket made out of commercial materials is worth. Plus, this will win me more awards and get me into bigger shows. Not that it is all about me, mind you. Don't think I am getting aswelled head. But I think this art needs to be shown...and let's face it..even though money can cause alot of problems, it is sure nice to have in this day and age that we live in.
Mike

I am happy to hear you will be using more "natural" materials, they may have a mind of their own at times but there are no mistakes in Art as you well know you may be surprised what direction they take you, best of luck and keep up the good work. AHO
