Yesterday, I went to my stand of four trees near the pond, not too far from my home, to have my time of prayer and meditation. Once again, the Great Mystery has enlightened me and shown me the path through an unexpected advisor.
As I sat there on my blanket, beneath my tree, next to the pond, I began to relax. Something I haven't been able to do for some time. As I relaxed, I began to sing. (I am not a singer by any stretch of the imagination, but I felt moved to praise the Great Mystery.) After singing for a bit, I settled into prayer.
AS I began to ask the Great Mystery for his help in releasing my pent up emotions, so that I could move forward on my path in a postive and productive manner... I asked for his help to hold on to the wisdom he had given me through these difficult times. I asked for his help to remember it, own it and be given the ability to pass it on.
Just then, Grandfather Huron appeared opposite me on the other side of the pond. He took my breath away. (I call him Grandfather Huron because I believe the Great Mystery has given me elders from the animal kingdom, since my life is lacking that of the human kind. ) I felt like the Great Mystery sent him to me to share a bit of wisdom to help me along.
After he got my attention, he took flight. I thought he was going to leave, but instead, he circled the pond at a relatively low height, so I could see his majestic form. He landed in the high branches of a tree near me where I could see him up close, without obstruction.
As I sat there, I watched him. I asked him what he had to share with me? What wisdom did he have to impart? While I sat there in silent meditation with him above me, the tree let go of some of its leaves. As I watched them drift slowly and gracefully to the pond like tears, I began to cry. The tree and I cried together for a time. When I stopped crying and my mind was cleared once more, I watched Grandfather Huron and listened. I wanted to hear his words of wisdom.
He spoke in his huron voice. I had never heard a huron before. The sound made me laugh inside because it sounded like he had a frog in his throat and I know that hurons like to occassionally eat frogs and my name is Patient Frog. I joked and asked if I should be worried. He seemed to look at me. In my head I could hear him speak to me. I know that sounds crazy, but it is what happened.
He said to me, "Now is not a time to hunt. It is a time for vigilance." I sat there and thought about the word vigilance. To me, it means to be warry of the enemy and to be on the look out for danger.
Grandfather Huron clarified or redefined the word vigilance for me. He said, "Vigilance is watching, listening, and most importantly, patient learning." I asked what I was suppose to be learning. He replied, "Learn to see and hear the beauty that surrounds you. You have been without sight and hearing for some time, due to the troubles that have consumed you. Once you can recognize the beauty in all situations, you will be able to figure out how to restore the the harmony and balance in your life. This is the purpose for vigilance."
Then he flew down to the pond's edge and slowly began to stalk quietly among the tall grasses. I watched as he slowly walked to the edge of the pond and stepped into the water without disturbing it. He diligently watched the ripples in the water made by fish below. He was still and quiet for quite some time. Then all of a sudden he pierced the water with his head and came up with a fish.
He said to me, "When you are able to recognize the beauty that surrounds you, you too will be able to recognize even the slightest disturbance below the surface. You will learn how to act quickly without disturbing the beauty and harmony around you. You are to learn how to help maintain the balance! Do you understand what I am telling you?"
I asked the Great Mystery to help me remember Grandfather Huron's words, so that I could get home and write them down, then I could ponder them further and figure out how to implement them into my life.
I am grateful to the Great Mystery for providing me with such wisdom from such unexpected messangers. I am grateful that He enables me to hear such wisdom and that he enchants me with such beautiful elders and their teachings.
This may seem just like a story to you and that is okay. Its wisdom may mean something different to you in your personal journey than it does to me and that is okay. I believe the wisdom that is shared with us is meant to help us where ever we happen to be, as long as we use it to move forward in the manner in which the Great Mystery has instructed us in our hearts, minds, and spirits. Take from this what you will and at least enjoy the story I have shared. Aho!
