I gotta tell ya! Around here you need to keep your witts about you sometimes. I see turtles (and am a good Scout and help them across the road), rabbits, squirrels, hawks, osprey, eagles, all manner of wildlife. I've had to drag my parents little yappers back inside the house (one a poo-dell and the other a terrier/maltese mix - definate terror personality - all puns intended here) because there were 3 little raccoon youngsters in the bushes, under the car - in plain sight and trying to hide. But nighttime - you will not find me outside. I'm visually and hearing impaired. So, you have to understand that I am hypervigilant inside the house at night.
I awoke to the sounds of something unusual and picked up my head so that my better ear could try to place what it was. It was pitch dark - no moon at all - and I'm hearing "ka-sha, ka-sha, ka-sha" several seconds pause then again "ka-sha, ka-sha, ka-sha". As soon as I turned the light on, it stopped. I waited, nothing. I turned the light out and, finally, was just dozing back off to sleep when I heard it again. I waited to figure out which direction (a hard thing for me to do) - then turned on the light. It stopped again. Ok! Now I'm really spooked. I waited, nothing. So I turned the light out and this time stayed awake - poised to touch my lamp again (turns on with a touch - breathe and it turns on). I waited... finally it started again. I let it keep going in the dark. Touched the lamp and sprang forward. It was my lovely little cat. She found a new toy... an empty plastic shopping bag that she slid her front paws into and pulls her front leg up and down making the sound I was hearing. She was just out of sight around the other side of the bed...
And believe me, I've had my cat signal me that something was amiss. She has jumped on me in the middle of the night with her body rigid in hunt mode and ears tracking something. I turned the light on to find a really large spider up on the wall near the ceiling. Yeah! Wilderness does have it's excitement.
