Cultural TidBit The Spiro Mounds, located near Poteau, were a major trade center in North America for Native Americans. Cherokee frequently traveled to this area for trade, as well as the Rocky Mountains. In the 1600's, the Cherokee obtained copper from the Great Lakes area.

The "old Cppper Culture" was located in the Great lakes region of the Midwest. Copper points, tools, ornaments were traded to other tribes. I've seen of a number of finds made by people metal detecting. This site has some history of the culture. copperculture.homestead.com/

Found a link with some history of the city. www.poteau-ok.com/history.html"Various races of men have called this region home. Between 500 and 1300 A.D., Mound Builders built their temples and burial places in what is now the Spiro area and northern LeFlore County, and roamed southward into the mountainous regions of LeFlore County. It has been said that Mayan Indians pressing up from Mexico, Central, and South America may have clashed with the Mound Builders hundreds of years ago. "

When I first went to the site it switched to another site so I tried again and was able to see it this time. I will need to it all later, have a few things to do around the house.
Where I live, an older gentleman told me while at an auction, they mined mercury here! Haven't really taken the time to research this but found it interesting.
I live in the area where all my relatives on my father's side lived. My backyard is woods with lots of large rocks, pretty cool sometimes to let the imagination go and envision the old ones that lived here!

Interesting, I did a search for what was mined where I live and found that it wasn't mercury it was maganese, not sure if this is magnesium or not. Also found that some of my relatives the mining was done on their properties. Have to let my son know about this, he's interested in geology!
