One of the things I love most about cherokee is how expressive it is..I am fascinated by words that cannot be directly translated, that take sometimes whole paragraphs in english to describe. So..for fun..I thought I might post one of these words and their definition as I know them to be..then we can discuss them..and if I am incorrect..I will learn.
Anyway..here goes..and again feel free to correct me..because I am just learning.

the cherokee Ah-ma means water..simple enough.. but Ah-ma-ye is very interesting it means
creek water -something that is always changing, tumbling, turbulent and unpredictable

This is a word that I wish I could take more to my heart.
Ah-ti-yo-s-di
it means that: -the argument is best left on the other side, leave it there or -the best revenge is to refuse to fight
I think that the second one is used between close family members

osiyo, dohegen! (hello..how are you) got another one for you..actually it is not so much a word as it is a phrase and some pretty good advice to boot.
un-tla ah-ee-de-hu-du-di
a little bit of a tongue twister..but with a little practice it works okay un-tla means.. "don't" or "no" or "isn't"...the negative.. and ah-ee-de-hu-du-di means..."the Great Spirit -insulted(offended)" so all together it means..
"Do not insult the Great Spirit"
pretty good advice *smile*..

here is one I really like..it has a relatively simple definition..but the implications are profound the word is:
a-da-do-li-s-di
(do is pronounced doe)
definition: prayer - the language of love and of worship.
to me it means that the ~act~ of prayer is a language all unto itself..the words we use, cherokee, french, chinese..no longer matter..the only thing that God understands is the ~act~ of praying,..... a-da-do-li-s-di

I love this word..it means.. "a profound sense of inner peace", "peace like a river", or "peace in the face of a storm" and I found one other definition.. "to make peace with the Earth"
do-na-do-go-hun-ee

osiyo everyone..just fyi..if you download the cherokee font and want to put cherokee symbols up here..then what you do is put "{font=Cherokee}what you want{/font} EXCEPT..you replace the {} brackets with the square ones just below them e.g. "[" and "]" and now for a word.. when pronounced..it sounds like chew-du-go-ta-nuhn but the english people write it like tsu-du-go-ta-nv and the cherokee would write it as #jatm it means.."A special place, or a special time, a piviotal moment in one's life or the life of a people" one other thought..if the admins for this board would like a script..I can give them one I got from proboards that will put a FONT drop down just below the word Message in the Quick Reply box..then everyone can just click and choose cherokee or whatever their default font is...just let me know *S*.. egads..almost forgot..the keyboard map..once you install the cherokee font is found at www.cherokee.org/Extras/Downloads/Font/Keyboard.htm

good morning all..of all the words and phrases I have studied..this one I think has the most interesting definition
it ia "ah ga-li-s-gun-ti-ti-ah" or in the syllabary
a glszdda
it means (take a deep breath for this one) "Those who have suffered and have heard the empty echos BUT have NOT listened to them"
wow.. I think that the empty echos refers to bad memories..memories of the suffering of the past and it refers to the power of the people, of the individual to move on..endure and indeed prosper INSPITE of bad memories, memories that almost seem to want to destroy us.
pretty deep ..
I was wondering if people would like me to post some simpler things? like names of animals, colors, or household items? any options/requests?

Many thanks to White Eagle who allowed me to put the font drop down just above "Message" in the Quick Reply box..if you have the cherokee font installed on your machine..then your machine will know how to interpret the java..for example..if you choose cherokee and put the value 2 inside the cherokee font brackets..it will display the work osiyo ...2
if you dont..then it will just look like a 2
anyway..it makes life easier in here and many thanks to White Eagle.

I thought instead of one of the complex "idea-words" that I have been putting up, I might just make a list of simpler words. Nouns that one comes across every day.
SO I thought..what about animals?
I picked just four, two everyday and two very important to the cherokee.
Cat, Bird, Wolf and Deer. (I added in parenthesis the english letters I put into cherokee font for the words)
Cat, we-sa, PA (PA) Bird, Chee-s-qua, }sq (}sq)
Wolf, Why-ya, \y (\y) Deer, Ah-Whee aW (aW)

hello again..
I know we all know 2, O-si-yo, for the cherokee it is a powerful greeting not just hello, but also good morning, good afternoon, good night..rather like aloha.
One response to 2 is O-si-qwun, or in cherokee oR7 I am FINE..
now..that last symbol 7, on the tapes I have it almost sounds like a G sound but that might be a reflection of his dialect. There were recorded by Many Towns.

2 a u4 osiyo a oo-doe Greetings my brothers/sisters First I would like to know if I should (periodically) clean up this board..put all the words on a single page or leave it as it is? Please let me know how you feel about this. Now, todays word, if/YU {if/YU} pronounced 'ee-gi-ni-yo-ha' is another cherokee word that is quite profound and shows just how poetic a people they are. if/YU means "what might have been does not govern us today" To me this reflects the ability to accept one's past, not to relive the good, not to dwell on the bad and instead to live today for today, make decisions in the here and now.

2!!!
Don't have a lot of time this morning..students driving me crazy and all (LOL)...but I wanted to put up just one word today..
chaw-loo-yee in cherokee font EmL {EmL on the keyboard}
it is translated as "Forest" but it also interpreted as "Forever"...I like that..forest and forever..

Post by Lone4eagle on Sept 3, 2008 10:58:21 GMT -6
I don't know many Cherokee words...sometime need to learn more. Forest, meaning "forever" is like an idiom (something in which the true meaning is lost in a literal translation).

a couple of new words.. first..the cherokee word for baby, (indeed..any little or small object) is oo-s-di or usd u-s-d on the keyboard.
the second is wind (which actually has two interpretations) oo-noo-lay or u0> u-0-> on the keyboard
so little breeze would be.. u0> usd oo-noo-lay oo-ss-di (literally wind-small)

how about White Eagle?
I think it would actually be Eagle-White or Ah-wah-ha-knee Yo-Nay-Ga or in cherokee font a\hl Ypg the english letters would be "a\hl Ypg" ..much prettier in cherokee font *S*..
so. 2 a\hl Ypg a dgpl (hello White Eagle my borther!)

2!!
Hello brothers and sisters! Just sticking my head in for another word..actually..decided to do another name.. ~~~~begin mysterious music~~~~
Today's target is: Laughing Eyes!! actually..I guess it would be Eyes laugh(ing) ..that's my best guess anyway..so if it is Eyes Laugh it would be dKt u}GT
the phonetics would be "dee-ka-tah ooh-chay-chee-tee" in the cherokee font you would type: "dKt u}GT"
I actually llike the way that sounds..it rolls off the tongue.. deekatah oohchaycheetee.. very nice..

Thank you...it is sort of making sense. I did a Google search for the downloadable fonts. Are there any sites that are more accurate than the others, or more user friendly, or whatever? I would be interested to install this and experiment with it. Perhaps then I would understand things better...if I saw things firsthand. I am intrigued to see what Cherokee letters look like.

Wado! I have not had time yet to download (actually I am just a bit stressed today, and these projects are usually not good for that time with me ...) But this will be at the tops of my lists when I have had time to recenter myself. You are a wonderful addition to this site. Thank you for helping here!
