Latin name: Panax quinquefolius
This was a highly prized plant that many took with them on the "Trail of Tears".
Used as a "pick-me-up".
Made a poultice from the roots to put on boils.
Tea made from the roots treated headaches & cramps.
Root was chewed and blown through a wooden tube onto a painful area.
Tea was used to stimulate appetite in elderly or those with flu, cold, or infections.
Over hunted and harvested today.
Ginseng is very fragile, it is protected by Golden Seal.

I have seen plants growing around Golden Seal, thought it might be Ginseng.
