The latin name is "Juglans nigra", I believe I have this spelled correctly but if not it should be close enough. Mr. Harris said it was easier to be able to purchase the plants/trees to make your own Cherokee garden if you have the latin name also.
Black Walnut: An infusion of the inner bark was used to treat small pox.
Bark should be used with caution because it is poisoneous!
Bark was chewed for a toothache.
Sap used as an antiseptic for things like ringworm.
Poultice made from the husks to aid in the dropping off of the umbilical cord of babies.
Nuts used as food.
Black husk used to make dark brown dye and the leaves to make a green dye.
Husks were used to "shock" fish.
Gigs were made from the wood.
Juglone (comes from the roots & leaves) will kill tomatoes, apples, potatoes, and connifers so you do not want to plant your garden at the same place.
Likes full sun, moist, well drained, loamy soils. Can reach 130 feet when fully grown. Can live as long as 250 years.
